The first edition of the Mallorca Championships will finally be played from June 19th to 26th 2021

After carefully considering all alternative dates and possibilities to host the tournament at a later stage in 2020, the organizers of the first ATP grass court tournament in the history of Spain have finally concluded that the tournament cannot be played in 2020. This decision comes as a consequence of the ATP announcement on April 1st when the Tour officially suspended its tournament operations until at least July 13th 2020, directly affecting the first edition of the Mallorca Championships, which was initially scheduled to play from June 20th to 27th this year.
One of the main reasons that lead to this decision is that, due to the current developments of the global Covid-19 pandemic, a further extension of the current ATP suspension measures cannot be ruled out at this time. Given the crowded tournament calendar of the ATP for the rest of 2020, and after thoughtfully reviewing all possibilities, alternative dates and scheduling scenarios, the organizers find no other way than rescheduling the first edition of the tournament to the next year. The first edition of the new ATP grass court tournament Mallorca Championships will finally be held from
June 19th to June 26th of 2021.
"The cancellation of all tennis tournaments on the ATP tour until 13th July was the right decision, giventhe current situation, despite it being a setback for us and our plans in Mallorca", explains the organizer and CEO of e|motion Group, Edwin Weindorfer. "We were on course with our preparations for June and very excited to deliver to our fans and our tournament partners and sponsors a world-class grass court tournament. Given the current developments of the global Covid-19 pandemic, we are sad to announce that we cannot find alternative dates in 2020 to play the event. The safety and health of the players, staff and fans has been of paramount importance during the decision-taking process".
"We are sad to announce that the tournament cannot be played as planned this year, despite the hard work of the organization. I do not want to miss the opportunity to wish all the best to our sponsors and fans, and to everyone in general during these difficult times", added Toni Nadal, the tournament director.
