Why is the fight against doping not really moving forward.  What is going wrong?

- Thoughts and ideas of leading representatives from sport, medicine and politics on the anti-doping fight:

…. Doug Logan. The Chairman of United States Track & Field (USATF) has called for lifelong bans for first-time drug users as doping in athletics is still of monumental proportions. If spectators are not able to believe what they see in the stadium, then it is not sport but a spectacle.
…. Helmut Pabst. The German sports doctor and doping tester is of the opinion that the times swum by Michael Phelps in Beijing to win eight Olympic gold medals cannot be explained by training alone.
…. Winfried Hermann. The sports political spokesman of the Bündnis90/Die Grünen party in the German parliament feels Germany lacks effective anti-doping legislation which punishes sports fraudsters.
…. Beate Merk. The Bavarian Minster of Justice has criticised the fact that the amended medicine and drugs law does not provide the state with the means by which they can act systematically against sportsmen and women that dope and investigate those that have an unfair advantage when going into a competition.
…. Perikles Simon. The sports physician from the renowned University of Mainz (Germany) has called upon the German government to protect the health and well-being of sportsmen and women by starting a more effective fight against doping. When considering the goings on in top level sport, the German Ministry of the Interior is not meeting its responsibilities.
…. Peter Danckert. The lawyer and Socialist Party Germany (SPD) member of parliament has accused sports officials and sports politicians in his book "Kraftmaschine Parlament" (Motor Parliament) of being, to various degrees, to blame for the extent of fraudulent pharmaceutical manipulation in top level sport was not curtailed earleir.
…. Richard Pound. The IOC official and former president of Wada has called for a close cooperation between the police and the public prosecutors. He admitted that the IOC failed to get to grips with the problem in China as one has too few weapons to combat the doping system and its mafia-like structures.
…. Thomas Bach. The IOC Vice President and head of the DOSB (German Olympic Sports Federation) is against anti-doping laws as athletes should not be criminalized. He ignores the fact that fair sportsmen and women have to be protected by an anti-doping law whereby drug taking athletes are criminalized.
…. Rasmus Damsgaard. The Danish anti-doping expert criticises that a laboratory destroyed five suspicious B-samples of athletes competing at the World Skiing Championships. In doing so they missed the opportunity of making the indirect proof of doping legally watertight.
…. Eufemiano Fuentes. Right up to the present day Operation Puerto involving the Spanish doctor Fuentes still has many untied ends. Of about one hundred names only a few athletes (Ullrich, Basso, Jaksche…) have been punished. Alongside cyclists other sports are suspected to have been involved in the doping case.





…. Night-time testing. In Spain, the legislators have forbidden the carrying out of doping tests on domestic and foreign athletes between 11.00 pm and 8.00 am. In dong so they have undermined an important Wada regulation in the fight against doping.
…. Football regulations. Wada's whereabouts policy which applies to every sport was modified for footballers after they were being pressurised to do so by FIFA, the sport's powerful governing body.
…. Klaus Riegert. The German member of parliament for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party is worried the Wada and its new management could fall behind the point at which the anti-doping fight loses its credibility.
…. Hassan Moustafan. Out of competition testing was not carried out prior to the Olympic Games and the World Championships by the International Handball Federation (IHF) as its president allegedly did not want to provide the funding.
…. Victor Conte. The American that supplied top athletes with non-detectable designer drugs (Balco Scandal) gave Richard Pound important information about a doping ring involving Jamaican track and field athletes. Pound informed the Wada General Secretary David Howman before the Olympic Games in Beijing as he believed the Wada could expose a doping ring.
…. Peter Danckert. The chairman of the German parliamentary committee for sport criticises the Wada's 25 million dollar budget as being scandalous. If the IOC and its member states, who give 10 and 15 million dollar respectively, are not prepared to give a great deal more then the fight against doping will never ever be successful.
…. Perikles Simon. The molecular biologist has accused the medical commission of the German National Anti-Doping Agency (Nada) of blocking the release of funding for the University of Bayreuth / Germany to develop a procedure to detect autologous blood doping and commercial funding for his project to find a way of detecting gene doping via gene transfer.  Anti-doping research in Germany is also of a low standard.
…. Jürgen Perl. The computer scientist from the University of Mainz / Germany has developed a special method based on the pulse and the training intensity to detect the misuse of drugs amongst athletes. Wilhelm Schänzer, the head of the Cologne anti-doping laboratory, sees it as being a very interesting development. The Nada is, on the other hand, incomprehensibly not interested.
…. Werner Franke. The cell biologist from Heidelberg / Germany feels that doping causes grievous bodily harm which ties in with a decision made by the Federal Court of Justice.
… Lee Sweeney. He was able to increase the muscle mass of mice by up to 27 per cent via gene manipulation. The scientist based at the University of Pennsylvania is now continuously receiving requests from sportsmen and women to do the same with them.
